Continente Portugal

Continente Portugal is a family-owned chain of hypermarkets which was founded in 1985. Continente was the first hypermarket to open in the country. The company also operates an online shop as well as a mobile application.

Continente Portugal started as a merger between Modelo and Continente. Continente was partly-owned by Carrefour. In 2008, Carrefour sold its shares to Sonae.

Continente Portugal manages 519 stores in Portugal. 

Continente Portugal operates in different formats:

• Continente: englobes the hypermarket format
• Continente Bom Dia: supermarkets and convenience stores
• Continente Modelo: shops located in urban centres

Continente Portugal recently opened a self check-out cashier-less shop, equipped with cameras and shelf sensors, in Lisbon. The firm is the first European business to do so.

 The firm launched the Continente Card on which customers can benefit from various promotions. Approximately 1.5 million of Continente Portugal’s clients own the card.

Continente Portugal achieved a turnover of €40 million in 2020.

Continente Portugal offers products in various categories which include:

• Drinks: soft drinks, juices, wine, beer, etc
• Frozen: meat, fruits, vegetables, ice-cream, fish, etc
• Dairy: milk, yoghurts, cheese, etc
• Household: air fresheners, detergents, dishwash liquid, etc

• Savory Grocery: spices, oil, mustard, etc

The company also offers vegetarian, vegan, organic and gluten-free products.

Continente Portugal works with brands such as Sagres, Persil, Nivea, Margao, etc.

Continente Portugal has developed several private labels which are as follows (not limited to):

• Casa Jardim: offers garden tools
• Animais Zu: supplies pet food and many others
• Continente Negocios: offers grocery items and many more

The firm imports its products from Germany, India, Switzerland and many more.

Continente Portugal saves 4200 tons of plastics every year. Moreover, the company supports over 1000 food bank organisations.
