Makro Uzbekistan
Makro is Uzbekistan's largest supermarket chain by store count, headquartered in Tashkent and owned by the Orient Group. Founded on December 11, 2010, the company has rapidly expanded to operate a network of 108 stores across 25 urban areas nationwide, including major cities such as Tashkent, Samarkand, Karshi, Navoi, Bukhara, and locations in the Fergana Valley.
Makro offers three distinct store formats tailored to different customer needs:
- Makro City: Hypermarkets exceeding 2,000 square meters, featuring a wide range of merchandise and prepared food counters.
- Makro Supermarket: Standard supermarkets with trading areas between 600 and 1,200 square meters.
- Makro Express 24: Convenience stores under 600 square meters for quick shopping.
The chain employs approximately 3,500 professionals and commands a significant market share of 20% in Tashkent and 5% nationally, positioning it ahead of competitors like Korzinka.uz, Carrefour, and Magnum. Around 20% of its merchandise is its in-house "M" brand, with 53% sourced locally in Uzbekistan, emphasizing food, beverages, and everyday essentials.
Makro pioneered several innovations in Uzbekistan, including self-checkout kiosks in 2020, electric vehicle charging stations, and an e-commerce platform with home delivery and a dedicated dark store for online orders. The company targets 5% online sales in Tashkent, with expansion to cities like Samarkand and Bukhara.
In 2021, Makro received Retail Asia Awards for Domestic Retailer of the Year and Convenience Store of the Year. It partnered with Ernst & Young for IFRS transition and maintains its own distribution center, logistics system, and food production facility to ensure quality and competitive pricing for fresh produce, beverages, and beauty products.
With aggressive growth—including opening 37 stores in four months in 2020 and reaching over 100 stores by 2022—Makro continues to develop modern retail formats, making it an attractive partner for FMCG suppliers seeking strong distribution in Uzbekistan's booming consumer market.
