Riu Hotel Spain

Riu Hotels is a hotel chain which was founded in Spain by the Riu family in 1953. The business started as a small holiday hotel and expanded over time. RIU Hotels is partly owned by TUI. RIU Hotels now operate over 100 hotels in 19 countries.

RIU Hotels launched its first hotel outside the Balearic Islands in 1985 in the Canary Islands. In 1991, the company started to venture on the international scene by opening its first hotel in the Dominican Republic. 

Riu Hotels now operate under 3 distinct banners:

• Riu Classic Hotels: targeted at groups, families and couples, these hotels are mainly for leisure and relaxation.

• Riu Palace Hotels: luxury hotels by the beach which are known for their spa and wellness facilities.

• RIU Plaza Hotels: urban hotels which are located in the city and mostly appropriate for people travelling for business. 

All Riu Hotels feature excellent restaurants:

• Krystal Restaurants: Krystal Restaurants are present in all the hotels and offer gourmet cuisine 

• Theme Restaurants: Riu Hotels has also launched exclusive theme restaurants that cater for a variety of international cuisines and concepts such as Mexican, Italian, SteakHouse, Asian, etc.

Many of the hotels also host themed parties with DJs and performances

Riu Hotels achieved a turnover of € 2.24 billion in 2019; an indication that its revenue has grown by 6.2% compared to 2018. Riu Hotels now employs 31270 people.

Riu Hotels is recognised as the 3rd largest chain of hotels in Spain and has been ranked as the 30th largest hotel group in the world.

Riu Hotels has been playing an active part in the communities its hotels are located. The chain has supported various projects. For instance, in Mexico, the firm has sponsored the creation of temporary classrooms as well as the education of 4000 children. 

Concerning the environment, the business has been carrying out projects for the protection of endangered species. Within its establishments, Riu Hotels has taken measures to save water and has also been reducing waste by using recycled materials for its packaging. Furthermore, waste is sorted and harmful substances are disposed appropriately without harming nature.
