The company gained popularity when it started selling prescription whiskey and it currently operates 9277 stores across the country and owns an online store as well as a mobile application. Walgreens has been a subsidiary of Walgreens Boots Alliance since 2014. 

Walgreens expanded over the years, acquiring the chain Happy Harry in 2006. The business has also ventured outside the US and bought 20 stores in Puerto Rico and in 2015, Walgreens also took over RiteAid which was its major competitor in the pharmaceutical business.
