AQVA LVCE NAVY
Between 1600 and 1700, British Navy crews were often paid in gin, and to check whether the spirit was of good quality, the sailors used to carry out the gunpowder test. If the gunpowder, once moistened with gin, still caught fire, then the test was passed, confirming that the spirit was at least 57° and had not been watered down. The higher alcohol content accentuates the balsamic flavour of the alpine botanicals and enhances their aromatic profile. It is still distilled in two 100-litre copper stills and comprises 12 ‘botanicals’, the main ones being: juniper, caraway, bay leaf, hops and caraway. On the palate, it is smooth and persistent; the herbaceous aroma is balanced by subtle bitter notes.
