2018 Botham Merrill Willis Chardonnay
The Story: Lord Ian Botham and Bob Willis are two of the biggest names in the modern era of world cricket. Geoff Merrill’s reputation on the international stage of winemaking is equally impressive.
A mutual passion for their respective professions, cricket and wine, drew them together during the English tour of Australia in 1978. Since then, a lasting friendship has developed over many bottles opened and balls bowled.
Vintage Information: The 2017 winter began quite dry, with just enough rain arriving in late winter and early spring to add some much-needed moisture to the soil depths. Aside from hot conditions during spring, the growing season progressed quite well.
Most varieties will have stand out examples, with 2018 seen overall as a terrific vintage with its most important varieties coming out on top.
Winemakers Notes: The colour is a bright youthful straw with green hues. The aroma displays subtle creamy French oak notes which perfectly complement the honeydew melon and grapefruit characters.
The palate begins with a fruity burst of tropical flavours which move through to zesty citrus on the finish. The careful use of oak has added depth, structure and complexity.
Food Pairing: Try it with Mushroom Risotto, Veal Scallopini, Steamed Scallops with Thai lime flavours, Chicken with Lemongrass and Roast Turkey.
