Just like people, quadrupeds also become a day older. That not only manifests itself in all kinds of bodily ailments, also the brain can show aging phenomena. In that case dogs have similar symptoms as people with dementia: behavioural changes such as a decreased orientation, hyperactivity, different sleep pattern, uncleanness, altered social interactions and activities or separation anxiety.
One can slow down the mental deterioration of the old dog, but not completely heal it: the brain tissue exhibits serious anatomical changes. The brains of dementia dogs make many more free radicals that can damage the brain tissue. Antioxidants from the added vitamin mix (vitamins A, D3, E and C) slow down the formation of these radicals and make them harmless.
Another important component is the pure Scottish salmon oil full of omega fatty acids. This is produced exclusively from by-products of salmon from the Atlantic Ocean (Salmosalar). This salmon is bred in Scottish sea arms under carefully controlled conditions for human consumption. Therefore the oil quality is constant. The oil retains its internal antioxidant system, because it is cleared from fresh salmon through a natural process without harmful chemicals or high temperatures. In addition, the product is further stabilised with the natural antioxidant Tocopherol (vitamin E). A special dioxin filtration system ensures that dioxin levels remain well below the legal norm.
The salmon oil contains essential fatty acids omega 3 (19%) and omega 6 (18.7%), but also omega 9 (39.7%), and therefore it is an excellent source of unsaturated fatty acids (82.8%). The most important are EPA and DHA, which contribute to an increase in brain functions. They improve concentration and focus. The body does not make omega 3 and omega 6 itself, which means that both humans and animals must take this from the diet. Even the salmon from which the oil is made extracts this from its algae diet. DHA improves memory and reaction time, and is very important for brain function at any age: in studies they noticed a significant improvement in memory and response time. With the aging, the DHA content decreases in the brain tissue and increases oxidation. This is associated with age cognitive decline. The intake of omega 3 fatty acids can slow these processes before they culminate in dementia.
You can support the aging dog with nutrients, but also a solid structure and mental stimulation are very important. Think of a fixed schedule to walk out and feed the dog and stimulating games in which the dog is mentally challenged. Furthermore, older dogs can become more insecure and anxious, making it more important to stimulate their self-confidence. In this regard, an extra reward or hug can do wonders.
