These are the renowned tomatoes of Vesuvius that can be stored, known locally as "del Piennolo" (“of the pendulum") This Vesuvian tomato greatly benefits from the volcanic soil and the abundant sunshine . The typical preservation of these tomatoes is in “pendulums”: complete clusters, called "schiocche" (snaps), that are arranged on a strip of hemp , tied in a circle, to form a single large cluster of several kilogrammes which is kept hanging from the ground in a dry, ventilated place.
