2016 Pimpala Vineyard Shiraz
The Story: “This exclusive, small batch release pay homage to the beautiful old vineyards that are the centrepiece of our home, the famous heritage listed Mount Hurtle winery. Established in the late 1800’s, Mount Hurtle has been our home since the early 1980’s.” - Geoff Merrill
Vintage Information: Preceding winter and spring rains were significantly lower than had been previously reducing crop potential in the important growth stages leading up to vintage. On average yields were down approximately 30% across many varieties in McLaren Vale.
With fluctuating temperatures in January and rainfalls in February resulted in a pause in vintage allowing ripening to occur at a more manageable rate. By the end of vintage, even with the lower crop yields, our fruit had more time to ripen properly resulting in very good flavour concentration, acidity and structure.
Winemakers Notes: The colour is a deep red with bright ruby hues. The aroma immediately speaks McLaren Vale, with chocolate, spice and mulberry fruits coming through first, followed by savoury meats, dried herbs and plum notes.
On the palate, bright clean red berry fruits come forward, slowly revealing a firm, fine tannin structure. With time in the glass, the wine relaxes and begins to show its subtleties and nuances that will continue to develop over the next few years.
Food Pairing: Enjoy with lamb shanks, BBQ lamb chops, Angus steak, chunky steak pie, BBQ beef skewers and medium hard cheese.
