Coop Italia
Coop Italia is the national consortium of the Coop system in Italy, coordinating a network of independent consumers' cooperatives that operate one of the country's largest supermarket chains. Headquartered in Casalecchio di Reno near Bologna, it supports strategic purchasing, product development, marketing, and logistics for its member cooperatives across the nation.
Originating from the first cooperative shop established in Turin in 1854, the Coop system has grown into a major player in Italian retail. As of 2010, it encompassed 115 consumers' cooperatives of varying sizes—9 large, 14 medium, and 92 small—operating 1,444 shops with 56,682 employees and generating annual revenue of €12.9 billion. The system serves millions of members, exceeding 7.4 million at that time, emphasizing quality, affordability, and consumer ownership.
Coop Italia optimizes purchases for grocery, fresh produce, and non-food sectors on national and international scales, including through its subsidiary Coop Far East and participation in the international buying alliance Coopernic. It develops private label products, with over 80% sourced from Italian producers under controlled, traceable supply chains focused on transparency, animal welfare, and sustainability. These initiatives highlight responsible sourcing in food, beverages, and related categories, making Coop a preferred partner for suppliers seeking reliable distribution.
The retail network features a variety of formats tailored to Italian consumers, primarily supermarkets and hypermarkets, offering extensive ranges in fresh foods, packaged groceries, drinks, beauty products, and household essentials. Major cooperatives include Coop Alleanza 3.0 in the Adriatic district (formed in 2016 from mergers), Coop Liguria and Coop Lombardia in the North-West, and others like NovaCoop. Recent structural changes, such as the 2025 merger of Coop Centro Italia and Unicoop Tirreno into Unicoop Etruria, continue to strengthen operational efficiency.
Beyond core retail, Coop extends its reach with CoopVoce, Italy's first mobile virtual network operator launched in 2007, and international ventures like Coop Italian Food for exporting private label products. Sustainability is integral, with policies promoting environmental protection, community welfare, and ethical labor practices throughout the supply chain.
For manufacturers and suppliers, Coop Italia offers access to a vast, loyal customer base through its extensive store network and expertise in developing high-quality, competitively priced products. Its focus on food, drinks, and beauty categories ensures strong market penetration and opportunities for long-term partnerships in Italy's dynamic FMCG sector.
