The Cooperative of Castelluccio’s lentils arises to gather a few farmers together, who are interested in the activity which characterizes Castelluccio’s tableland: the cultivation of lentils. Unique for its small dimensions and its unmistakable flavour the lentil comes up at an altitude of 1500 m, in the heart of Monti Sibillini National Park. Sown as soon as the blanket of snow is completely melted, it becomes the protagonist of Fioritura’s Day, that in the last weeks of June offers a grandiose view. In August the harvest takes place and the season ends with the Trebbiatura’s Day, that is the symbol of the ancient country traditions. The object of our Cooperative is to offer a wholesome product, whose cultivation technologies don’t use chemical fertilizers. In order to protect the consumer and safeguard the product from imitations, in 1997 The European Union gives to Castelluccio’s lentils the identification of I.G.P. (Indicazione Geografica Protetta), solving the problem concerning the introduction of common lentils sold as Castelluccio’s lentils.
