Deliveroo
Will Shu and Greg Orlowski established Deliveroo, a food delivery business, in 2013 in the UK. The idea emerged when Will Shu moved to London and realised that while there were many restaurants operating all around the city, very few of them provide home delivery services.
Deliveroo collaborates with different food service businesses and offer delivery services within 30 minutes. Customers can access the Deliveroo platform through the website or application and order from various restaurants within the area. Some of the food service businesses that collaborate with Deliveroo include Pret A Manger, Pizza Hut, Burger King, Nando’s, etc.
In addition to this, the company also delivers groceries and has partnered with retail chains such as Aldi, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, etc.
Deliveroo charges a delivery fee to customers depending on the location and its partners are charged a commission. Since 2017, UK customers who subscribed to Deliveroo Plus do not incur delivery charges.
Within a few years since its creation, Deliveroo has entered European markets such as France, Ireland, Belgium, Spain, etc. Furthermore, the food delivery business has also expanded to other continents, starting its operations in Hong Kong, Australia, UAE, etc.
In order to help restaurants reach more customers, Deliveroo has started Deliveroo Editions Kitchens. This service enables restaurants and other food service businesses to set up delivery-only kitchens in specific areas identified by Deliveroo. These dark kitchens can be set up within 8 to 12 weeks at a lower cost compared to a full-fledged restaurant.
In 2020, Deliveroo’s turnover rose by 650% to € 4.8 billion and presently employs 30000 people.
Deliveroo employs riders who pick up the orders from restaurants and dark kitchens to the customers. The riders use bicycles or motorcycles to carry out the deliveries. Customers can track their orders through the application.
Concerned with different communities, Deliveroo has pledged to deliver 1 million meals to those in need through its Full Life Campaign. To achieve this goal, it has partnered with organisations such as NHS and Pride in London.
