Founded under the name J.L Turner and Son in 1939, the business traded as a wholesaler in the US. In 1955, Dollar General was launched, becoming the first store in the US to sell products under $1. 

Dollar General is now a general retail chain with over 17 426 stores in 46 states in the US. The firm also operates an online shop. Dollar General offers food and non-food products. 

Furthermore, Dollar General also manages an office in Hong Kong. 

Dollar General employs 150 000 people and achieved a turnover of €28.7 billion in 2021, up by 19.49% compared to 2020.

Dollar General Literacy Foundation was launched and it has been supporting local schools to create literacy and educational programs for illiterate people and  also sponsors sports auto racing events including NASCAR.
