HUON’S FARMING PRACTICES

Looking After The Environment Huon Salmon have a strong focus on continuous environmental monitoring and have long been a pioneer of salmon feeding methods and technology. We farm in high-energy sites in the south of Tasmania that are exposed to consistent, challenging weather events, as the fish have better growing conditions whilst reducing our environmental impact.

World Class Farming Focusing on animal welfare, Huon are proud to be farming Australia’s first and only RSPCA Approved salmon. Huon’s salmon are raised in clean, oxygen-rich water and we have some of the lowest stocking densities in the world at a maximum of 1% fish to 99% water in any given pen, our fish have plenty of space for swimming and are handled in a low-stress manner. Our patented Fortress Pens are the biggest in the world, measuring 240m in circumference.  

Traceability Equally as important as what is in the feed, is what is left out. Our feed does not contain growth promoters, hormones, antibiotics and genetically modified organism’s ingredients.

WELL NOURISHED – The highest quality feed dispensed by our ingenious remote feeding systems with patented Artificial Intelligence technology, based in our Hobart office. This results in significant reduction in food conversion (the amount of food required to produce 1kg of salmon), the ability to set net cleaning schedules and reduce diver interactions in the pens.

KEPT CLEAN AND HEALTHY – Nurtured in the most spacious enclosures in the world thanks to our patented Fortress Pens. That’s 99 percent water to 1 percent fish!
