Founded in 1835, McKesson Europe is the provider of pharmaceutical solutions and services. In 2014 McKesson Corporation a US company acquired Celesio AG by 75%. Global leader in the healthcare supply chain solutions, the major company decided to develop its activities in Europe through this acquisition.
Mckesson Europe employs more than 38000 people. In 2018, the company achieved a turnover of € 91 million.
The operations of the company is divided into 2 units :
- Consumer solution which includes 2100 own and 300 managed retail pharmacies
- Pharmacy solution involving the wholesale of pharmaceutical products as well as pharmacy cooperation programs in Germany, France, Portugal and Belgium. This particular unit has 110 own wholesale branches and 7 managed wholesale branches which supports 55,000 pharmacies and hospitals through the provision of 130,000 pharmaceutical products.
Today, the group has strong brands and operates in 13 European countries serving 2 million customers in over 2150 pharmacies.
Indeed, the 13 European countries are:
- Austria where the company operates under the name Herba Chemosan which serves as a wholesaler in the country. Founded in 1916, Herba Chemosan supplies approximately 1100 pharmacies with the help of 7 distribution centres.
- Belgium - McKesson is present in Belgium through pre wholesaling and wholesaling activities. The operations extends to Llyods pharma, Phama Belgium, Cophama distribution, Pharmactive and Sofiadis.
- Denmark - 2nd largest pharmaceutical company in Denmark, having 2 distribution centres and providing pharmacy solutions.
- France - Established in 1924, OCP has now become the 2nd largest pharmaceutical wholesaler in the French market having 45 distribution centres.
- Germany - Gehe is the supplier of owner operated and hospital pharmacies through 19 distribution centres, 4 times per day.
- Ireland - McKesson acquired United Drug in 2016 and today is the largest wholesaler in Ireland specialised in pharmaceutical products having 94 pharmacies.
- Italy - Country where the EPN concept was initiated and now over 77% of McKesson pharmacies’ in Italy are under the EPN concept.
- Netherlands - McKesson operations in Netherlands is based on the joint venture between McKesson Europe and Phoenix. There is also the Brocacef group which supplies various health organisations.
- Norway - Pharmacy and consumer solutions are provided both through retail (Vitusapotek and Ditt Apotek)l and wholesale activities (Norsk Medisinaldepot) with 2 distribution centres.
- Portugal - In portugal McKesson trades under the name OCP (wholesaler). OCP Portugal has 7 distribution centres and a market share of 23%.
- Slovenia - Operating as Kemofarmacija (wholesaler), the company has been part of McKesson since 2004 and provides pharmacy solutions as well.
- Sweden - LloydsApotek with 79 pharmacies.
- United Kingdom - Pharmacy network under the name Celesio with over 1800 pharmacies.
