Ocean’s Halo is dedicated to bringing Asian-inspired, umami flavor food products to the U.S. and European consumer. Seaweed itself is debatably the world’s most sustainable crop, and it is a primary ingredient in almost all Ocean’s Halo products. Different from conventional agriculture, farming seaweed requires zero pesticides, fresh water, or arable land, which saves these critical resources. Seaweed itself actually has a negative carbon footprint because it sequesters carbon from the ecosystem in which it is grown. We harvest our seaweed from Certified Organic ocean farms off the southwest coast of South Korea. In fact, all Ocean’s Halo products are certified USDA Organic. Our Ocean’s Halo line is entirely plant-based and all products with the exception of our honey sweetened beverages are Certified Vegan. Ocean’s Halo’s line of Vegan Broths utilize kelp extract, and are packaged with TetraPak. TetraPak packaging is labeled FSC, which means that TetraPak sources the pulp for their cartons from sustainably managed forests. Ocean’s Halo plans to go further than this to incorporate TetraPak’s bio-based caps, made using sugarcane. Ocean’s Halo’s line of NoSoy Sauces is dedicated to displacing soy in the market for sodium and allergen concerns, yet over farming has also created environmental concerns. There are many environmental and social issues due to the cultivation of soybeans, including deforestation, soil degradation, fresh water contamination, and the exploitation of farmworkers. Traditional soy sauces are often packed with sodium, and sodium-rich diets can lead to health problems related to the heart. Soy is also one of the eight most common food allergens in the world. The role of Ocean’s Halo NoSoy sauces is to offer an alternative to traditional soy-based sauces to lead our food system down a positive path of using ingredients that our planet can manage and ingredients that are less harmful and more beneficial to the health of our consumers. Ocean’s Halo’s line of Noodle Bowls and Big Bowl of Noodles feature a biodegradable plant-fiber and microwaveable bowl in order to reduce the use of plastic and Styrofoam waste used in similar products. Ocean’s Halo launched its first product in a BPI Certified compostable package. Similarly, Ocean’s Halo Seaweed Snacks and Sushi Nori packaging is currently in testing stages for moving towards full production of fully compostable packaging using PLA technology and compostable corn starch trays. Today, the desiccant inside of the Ocean’s Halo Seaweed Snack and Nori packages are compostable. Ocean’s Halo just launched an innovative kelp-based drink that contains deep-sea water. This drink promotes the use replenish-able sources of water, as opposed to non-replenish-able sources such as fresh spring water, groundwater, and surface water. Ocean’s Halo Deep Sea Waters feature a glass bottle to reduce plastic waste in waterways such as the ocean. We use Organic honey to lightly sweeten our Deep Sea Waters. We chose honey (as opposed to cane sugar) as a source of sugar because we believe that Organic Honey is significantly more socially & naturally environment-friendly than the impact of farming cane sugar. Aside from brick and mortar retail, Ocean’s Halo also sells products online, including Amazon.com and Walmart.com as well as our own website. In order to reduce their impact on our environment, Ocean’s Halo reuses packaging materials for online orders whenever possible. Most Ocean’s Halo online orders are shipped using repurposed packaging materials.
