“Sainte-Lucie gets its name from a vanilla and spice plantation lying in the north-east of the island of Madagascar, the main region for growing vanilla planifolia. In 1885 operations start in the city; they are essentially based on “importing and processing vanilla and selling spices (peppers and cloves).”
