Smart Supermarket Malta
Smart Supermarket Ltd is one of Malta's largest standalone grocery retail complexes, located in the heart of Birkirkara and trading since 1981. It was founded by Carmelo Grech — who had earlier established the "Smart Shirt" textile factory in 1960 — with the supermarket beginning in a converted factory space and expanding over the decades by taking over neighbouring buildings.
Rather than operating as a multi-store chain, Smart built its position around a single large-format destination laid out over one floor, with ample parking and multiple access points, supported by strong assortment breadth and large-format shopping capacity that make it a well-known shopping destination on the island.
The store offers a full fresh-food and grocery range, with an in-house bakery, delicatessen counter, fishmonger, fresh vegetable counter and butcher, as well as a dedicated Naturali organic food shop. The wider Smart complex also hosts non-food outlets such as Mothercare and Matalan.
Smart was the first supermarket in Malta to offer online shopping, launching the service in 2001, with home delivery available on larger orders. It also runs a loyalty scheme rewarding shoppers with points, plus a Baby Club discount programme, and is estimated to generate annual revenue in the region of €30–35 million.
With its high-footfall single-site format, broad fresh and grocery offer and long-established local reputation, Smart Supermarket is an attractive listing partner for food, beverage and household manufacturers targeting the Maltese market.
