We commercialize sugar and its derivatives, such as producing candies, drops and caramels. The brand Colombo appears associated with the sugar and the brands Villa and Heller appear associated to the candies.
A Sweets and Sugar make part of Porto Bay Hotels Group. The company is installed in Madeira island, Portugal.
Sweets and Sugar,SA is celebrating 19 years, and since 2006 is passing for a effulgent moment being in 2008 certificated in System of Management of Quality ISO 9001 and in 2010 recognized as the Product of the Year (candies, drops and caramels). Since 2006 the production and the billing quadrupled.
With the investments made in the last years the capacity of production comes up to eight thousand tons and the billing rise to the predictable 15 million euros. There is a big expectation of internationalization betting on the markets of Russia, Canary Islands, Angola and other markets and own brands.
The rigor for Quality is based on different topics such as the selection and control in the reception of raw materials (e.g. sugar, glucose, dyes and natural essences) and secondary materials (e.g. plastic and cardboard). We only work with quality certificated producers classified by levels of importance in their quality. This type of rigged control makes our product with a very uniform standard (color, taste and shape).
Regular audits are realized periodically to our factory, evaluating very tightly the production process, all the raw materials and materials for packaging, effectuating microbiological tests every 3 months.
Sweets and Sugar, S.A., in order to guarantee the quality of services and products that correspond to the expectations of its customers, has implemented the BRC Standard for Food Safety in the field of Candy, Drops, Caramels, Sugar and its derivatives.
This Certification demonstrates our commitment to:

Careful selection of our Suppliers, to ensure that we achieve the high quality standard intended for the realization of the products.
The analysis plan for our product includes sensory, physico-chemical and microbiological analysis to all our references in an accredited external laboratory, which issues the proper declaration of conformity. This analysis of the product by an external entity qualified to conduct expert examinations is carried out annually by us. Throughout the year, our product is contractually analyzed by our customers' laboratories, which send us their analyzes, so we ensure a rigorous analytical control of the final product.
Annually, audits are performed that reinforce the effectiveness of the implemented HACCP Quality and Food Safety Management system.
About the Human Resources and Logistic we need to emphasize the existence of 45 collaborators, covering Portugal and Spain, rewarded for their effort and amazing results. The continue production lines starts at 07:00a.m and end at 11:30p.m, and the packaging is a 24 hours service (made by shifts). The levels of stock in Portugal continental are superiors to the completion.
With own offices and a logistic warehouse in the zone of Aveiras ( Lisbon). Guarantee deliveries by logistic operator within a maximum of 48 hours anywhere in the Iberian Peninsula.
The own brands forced not only Sweets and Sugar but also almost all the industrialists to produce brands of the distribution, being in this moment between 50 to 55% of our production.
More and more frequently the brands don’t stop in the main references they are try innovate with new flavors and textures and also in the packaging.
Sweets and Sugar have been contributing in an exemplary way with our brands of Distribution being provided for this growth that all the brands for us produced had had growth guaranteed year after year.
This amazing effort made Sweets and Sugar have a greater recognition that was reflected one more time in the quality of our products
To achieve notoriety more than a permanent care with quality was necessary invest since 2011 over 5 million euros in new production lines and equipment.
This investment in the top technology not only brings innovation and quality but also brings with it a sustained growth in every year.
The company is almost automatized in 90% achieving a ratio of productivity per worker well above the competition specially face to the others national producers. This automation also allows a really effective control of the wastes that are low than 1,5% in the whole company. All this factors assure efficiency of productivity and processes and this origin one bigger competitive edge, effectively demonstrated with the contracts however obtained being most of them with own brands.

The PortoBay group is currently responsible for the management of 13 hotel units: 10 in Portugal (6 on the island of Madeira, 1 in the Algarve, 2 in Lisbon and 1 in Porto) and 3 units in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, Buzios and Sao Paulo). with an approximate total of 3200 beds in the 4 and 5 star segments.
