Apricots were known by the Romans and Greeks as 'golden eggs of the sun'. Cultivated successfully in the sixteenth century in Northern Europe and made their way to England in Tudor Times. Apricots have been widely used in European folk medicine as a nerve tonic. It is known to have a balancing effect on the nervous system and is good for insomnia and mental fatigue as well as anaemia. Ideal for tarts and flans and is an excellent accompaniment with lamb and rice dishes.
