Custard Tarts Gourmet
The Custard Tarts are a baked deep frozen dessert ready to eat that consists of an outer puff pastry crust filled with milk and egg prepared custard.
On the brink of the 19th century a liberal revolution led to the closing of all convents in Portugal. In 1837, in an attempt to sustain their livelihood, members of the clergy of the Monastery of Jerónimos started to bake pastries from a secret recipe with the intent to sell what are now known as Pastéis de Nata - Custard Tarts.
The magnitude and exquisite beauty of the Monastery of Jerónimos and the Belém Tower attracted countless visitors who started to seek this Portuguese delicatessen. With a recipe that remains practically unchanged to this day, Pastéis de Nata offer the rich flavor of quality and tradition that boasted worldwide recognition.
