Soursop was one of the first fruit trees to be transported from America to the tropics of the Old World, where it has become widespread from southeastern China to Australia and the warm lowlands of eastern and western Africa.

The taste is best described as a combination of strawberry and pineapple, with sour citrus notes contrasting with an underlying creamy taste reminiscent of coconut or banana. The pulp consists of an edible, white pulp, fiber and a core of indigestible, black seeds.
