Spar Austria
SPAR Austria, officially SPAR Österreichische Warenhandels-Aktiengesellschaft, is Austria's leading food retail group, operating as a 100% privately owned Austrian company headquartered in Salzburg.
Founded in 1954 in Tyrol by Hans F. Reisch together with 100 independent retailers, SPAR has grown into a major player in Central European retail. The current SPAR AG structure was established in 1970, developing a multi-format retail strategy that includes company-owned stores nationwide and partnerships with independent retailers.
In Austria, SPAR maintains market leadership in food retail, offering a wide assortment of groceries, beverages, and consumer goods through various store formats. Key formats include INTERSPAR hypermarkets (ranging from 3,000 to 6,000 m²), standard SPAR supermarkets, SPAR Gourmet specialty stores focusing on premium foods (around 50 locations mainly in Vienna, originating from the 2000 acquisition of Julius Meinl units), and convenience options like SPAR express, INTERSPAR Pronto, and take-away services.
The group emphasizes fresh foods, bakery products, and ready-to-eat meals, with additional services such as INTERSPAR bakeries, Café Cappuccino outlets, and maxi.restaurants. SPAR supports regional presence through six regional centers managing supply and operations across Austria, ensuring proximity to local markets.
In 2024, SPAR Austria achieved sales revenue of €10.38 billion in the domestic market, contributing to the broader SPAR Austria Group's total of €21.43 billion (+4.5% growth). The company invested over €780 million that year in warehouse expansions, store modernizations, and digitalization, including electronic shelf labels in over 300 stores. Approximately 50,000 of the group's nearly 94,000 employees work in Austria.
SPAR Austria operates around 1,511 stores in the country, including SPAR, EUROSPAR, and INTERSPAR formats, supported by central distribution centers like the one in Wels. The retailer also runs online grocery services via interspar.at, enhancing accessibility for food and beverage shopping.
As part of the family-owned ASPIAG (Austria SPAR International AG), SPAR extends operations internationally but remains firmly rooted in Austria's retail landscape, prioritizing innovation in store design, logistics, and customer service to serve daily needs in food, drinks, and household essentials.
