SPAR Magyarország Kereskedelmi Korlátolt Felelősségű Társaság, commonly known as SPAR Hungary, is a leading food retail chain in Hungary and a subsidiary of ASPIAG (Austria SPAR International AG). Established in 1990 through the acquisition of General Kereskedelmi Rt. in Tatabánya, SPAR Hungary opened its first supermarket there in 1991. The company has since expanded significantly, becoming one of the largest retailers in the country.
SPAR Hungary operates a diverse network of stores, including INTERSPAR hypermarkets, SPAR supermarkets, City SPAR units, and SPAR Express convenience stores. As of recent data, the network comprises approximately 652 SPAR stores nationwide, with 34 INTERSPAR hypermarkets featuring sales areas of 4,000 to 6,000 square meters and offering around 30,000 products, two-thirds of which are food items such as fresh produce, alongside electronics, household goods, clothing, and seasonal products. The company also partners with fuel stations like OMV and Lukoil for 85 SPAR Express forecourt stores.
Key expansions include the takeover of 14 Billa stores in 2002, 22 Kaiser’s supermarkets in 2003, and 177 Plus discount chain stores in 2008. In 2020, SPAR Hungary acquired ZIMBO Perbál Húsipari Termelő Kft., enhancing its REGNUM meat processing capabilities. The headquarters, logistics center, and REGNUM plant are located in Bicske, 40 km west of Budapest, with a second logistics center and SPAR Enjoy convenience facility in Üllő.
In 2024, SPAR Hungary achieved net revenue of approximately 2.25 billion EUR. The company employs around 13,557 people in Hungary as of late 2025 data, positioning it as one of the nation's largest employers. It maintains a strong market position, ranked 19th largest company in Hungary by Coface CEE Top 500, and was named Supermarket Chain of the Year 2024 for its 332-store network.
SPAR Hungary offers a wide product assortment, including over 4,500 private label goods and 1,000 country-specific items, with a focus on food, beverages, and fresh products. An online shop launched in 2019 provides home delivery in Budapest and over 50 surrounding municipalities via a dedicated fleet. The franchise system, expanded since 2012, includes over 200 partner units operated by independent family-owned enterprises, benefiting from SPAR branding, own-brand products, and expertise.
