Challenging conditions in 2016 led to a reduced wine grape crop for South African producers but grapes were healthy and promises good wines with concentrated
flavours.

The total wine crop came in a 6.7% lower than in 2015. Water supplies also had a great impact on the harvest this year, especially where vineyards were not buffered against the heat. Regions which had sufficient winter rainfall, had higher productions while most other regions produced smaller crops. From the end of October towards the end of January, the weather was very warm, which restricted the growth and constituted lower bunch masses and smaller berries. The dry conditions, however, led to vineyards and grapes being very healthy in general. The smaller berries led to more concentrated colour and flavour in the wines.

Our figs are coming from the most well-known city for its quality fig products, Aydin Region in Turkey. Fresh figs are sun dried, washed in water, graded and inspected for Aflatoxin value respectively.

​Our single-vineyard wines made from the best parcels of the Quinta de Quercus Estate: the 24.3-ha “Camino Las Morras” and the 20.9-ha “Viña Ocaña”. Both are hillside plantings of around 30 year-old Tempranillo vines, studded with centenary oak trees and farmed sustainably to achieve perfectly balanced wines. We produce two labels from these parcels: the firs wine Quercus and the second wine Quinta de Quercus. Both wines reflect the vineyards’ 800m altitude in their distinct freshness and elegance, while also displaying excellent concentration, purity and depth. While Quinta de Quercus is more fruit-driven and approachable in youth, Quercus is the finer, more complex wine, needing more bottle age to reach its plenitude.

The Oveja Series is a “dynamic” range of limited releases. Under these labels we bottle single fermentation tanks that are the result of our work and experiments in the vineyard. The varieties and quantities bottled will vary from year to year, but we promise that all wines bottled under the Oveja labels are interesting and fun and show the potential of our area and grape varieties. The sheep on the labels represent not only our region and heritage, but are also a symbol of our honest approach to winemaking. Bottled at our premises in Fuente de Pedro Naharro.
