In April 2022, a new tax will come into force aimed at increasing the minimum level of recycled content in plastic packaging to 30%. As a responsible manufacturer and an established champion of recycled plastics, Spectra supports the new move and has already put in place measures for the new policy with the rollout of our new PCR30 initiative. 

PCR3O will see all new quoted projects include a minimum of 30% PCR as standard. Any customers not wanting 30% recycled content will need to advise us on their opt-out wishes. PCR30 follows our successful PCR10 initiative, which was launched in 2018 to widespread customer support. PCR10 provided the perfect launchpad for brands looking to embrace recycled content, and we anticipate this new environmental standard will further incentivise others to ramp up their responsible packaging endeavours for the good of the environment.

Sustainable packaging without compromise

Spectra’s sugarcane-based biopolymer HDPE and PET materials are produced using ethanol from sugarcane as opposed to conventional HDPE and PET which traditionally contain fossil-based raw materials such as oil or natural gas.

The renewable sugarcane captures CO2 from the atmosphere, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Unlike regular biopolymers, which can’t be recycled without damaging the recycling chain, Spectra’s biopolymers are recyclable. These bio-based materials provide a genuine direct replacement for standard HDPE and PET – perfect for a truly sustainable packaging solution.

Those customers concerned about compromising the end result can rest assured that biopolymers maintain the same chemical properties as conventional oil-based HDPE and PET. This means there is no difference in performance or appearance to the end result, meaning you can make a difference without seeing a difference.

Spectra Packaging recently created new packs for French customer Cultiv Cosmetique, for their new 24 hour moisturising body milk.

Taking advantage of Spectra’s versatile tubular design, the sleek new 250ml packs were extrusion blow-moulded in 50% Post-Consumer Recycled HDPE (Ref: 6060).

To provide the complete packaging solution, Spectra’s dedicated in-house decoration department finished the packs with two-pass printing to work harmoniously with Cultiv’s existing product lines.

Plastic products that have completed their life cycle as an everyday consumer item and then been recovered from waste are known as post-consumer. The post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics most commonly used for packaging derive from PET & HDPE products such as clear drinks bottles and more opaque milk bottles.

certificate from TÜV AUSTRIA and are approved for industrial composting according to EN 13432 standard by DIN CERTCO.

reLIFE™ is Taghleef’s range of recycled polypropylene films that brings new life to used materials.

Packaging and label films are made with either PCR (chemically or mechanically recycled) or RPG (reprocessed granules) content. PCR-CHEM films are ISCC Plus certified.

SHAPE360® TDS is a high TD shrink clear film that improves PET
bottle recycling quality and efficiency by ensuring the separation
of floatable printed sleeves from rigid PET flakes. Thanks to its low density the weight of the label is reduced.

TDS is compatible with Polyolefin sorting streams, and is therefore a perfect solution for PP and HDPE containers.

The film guarantees up to 65% shrinkage enabling the labelling of empty and thin-wall containers with no squeezing risk. Moreover, its negligible MD shrink prevents any undesired “smile effect” at bottle extremities.
