Our new in-house technology has enabled us to produce a totally new film with unique barrier properties. Propafilm Strata SL has a very effective barrier to aroma, mineral oils and oxygen even at high relative humidity levels ensuring increased shelf life and reduced food waste.
The fact that this film is transparent enables wrapped products to be seen by the consumer, a growing trend in the food industry. This glossy film is also food contact compliant and chlorine free.
All our beta trials during the development of this product have been very effective. Strata SL has performed exactly as we expected, proving excellent machinability and printability.
Some of our customers are currently running shelf-life tests to prove the product for their particular application which will provide us with real test results.
Our target markets for this packaging film are cereal bars, biscuits, snacks, dried fruit and nuts as well as tea and coffee. This new development is very timely in view of the industry move towards recyclability and a circular economy.
Innovia Films new transparent high barrier packaging film Propafilm™ Strata S has been designed to be a standalone mono filmic solution or, to be used in laminate constructions to be ‘recycle ready’, or recyclable in countries which have the infrastructure to recycle polypropylene films.
A new family of highly functional recyclable BOPP films named Encore is now available. These are manufactured from renewable non-food based raw materials, helping to reduce the use of fossil based virgin raw materials.
The Encore packaging and labelling film range will have exactly the same properties as equivalent fossil based BOPP film - high clarity and gloss, high stiffness, excellent water vapour barrier and printability.
Encore has already been assessed by Interseroh an independent German recycling and consulting company and has received their highest rating, confirming they are fully recyclable.
Using our in-house Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) programme, we have clculated that by using renewable polymer we can determine that Encore films offer reductions in carbon footprint*. The Encore film range has an International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC PLUS) using a mass balance approach. They are suitable for use in all market segments currently using BOPP films.
The first two grades of Encore film to be launched will be announced in the coming weeks, one will be a low temperature heat seal film Encore REF, for packaging and one for pressure sensitive labelling applications Encore C45cn.
Innovia Films is launching a new family of highly functional recyclable BOPP films named Encore. These are manufactured from renewable non-food based raw materials, helping to reduce the use of fossil based virgin raw materials.

According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation programme CE100 co-authored report “achieving the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals and Paris Agreement climate targets will hinge upon the global transition to a low-carbon circular economy”. In line with this, major brand owners are making commitments to move towards net zero emissions and as part of this will communicate the carbon footprint of each product.
The availability of a carbon neutral film to lower the labels’ carbon footprint is one step to help towards this net zero emissions goal.

Incorporating a disposable and replaceable inner cartridge is APC Packaging’s newest innovation towards sustainable packaging. “Innovation is defined by APC Packaging as a solution that must meet several criteria for us to consider it an innovation,” according to Robert Bulla, Director of Engineering & Innovation. “An innovation must be replicable, economical and satisfy a particular need in the market. Most airless refillable packages on the market are simply a screw-off pump branded as refillable. The material selection has not changed, and the materials utilized are not easily recyclable. Another issue that we are seeing is that the packaging is not intuitive for user-friendly use and reuse,” states Bulla.
The Airless Refillable System designed by APC Packaging’s engineering department utilizes a simple push of a button to release the inner assembly which allows the customer to easily replace only the inner bottle and then easily slide and snap back into position. The Airless Refillable System will be available in 30ml and 50ml versions.

Tetra Pak is accelerating the expansion of its paper straws offering to ensure further renewable and low carbon materials across the range of packaging solutions. The aim of this is to address a broad range of customer sustainability needs without compromising on food safety, while still delivering on the end-user drinking experience.

The plant-based polymers used in some Tetra Pak cartons, like their closures, are produced from sugarcane.
Plant-based polymer supplier Braskem has now reached 100% Bonsucro certified volumes of sugarcane derived bioethanol for Tetra Pak’s plant-based solutions, establishing full supply chain transparency.
Bonsucro provides a global platform for collective action to accelerate sustainability in the production and processing of sugarcane.
This third-party certification and product labelling of their sugarcane-derived packaging is a milestone.

Our plant-based polymers are fully traceable to their sugarcane origin. We see plant-based materials as playing a key role in achieving a low-carbon circular economy. In the future all polymers we use will either be made from plant-based materials or from post-consumption recycled food grades. The use of plant-based materials such as paper and polymers, significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, supporting economic growth that is decoupled from fossil, finite sources.
As signatories of the Ellen MacArthur New Plastics Economy Global Commitment Tetra Pak has pledged to incorporate a minimum of 10% recycled plastic content on average across carton packages sold in Europe by 2025, subject to suitable food-grade recycled plastics being technically and economically available.
Having worked closely with INEOS and RSB in the past few months, we are now able to offer carton packages integrating attributed recycled polymers, further enabling the sustainability transformation of the food industry.
Using recycled material can contribute to increased recycling rates and make recycling more economically viable. However, reliable sourcing and quality can be a challenge, due to the limited availability of food-grade recycled plastics in the market at present.
To meet this challenge, Tetra Pak initiated a close supplier collaboration to explore utilising recycled polymers in carton packages and identified INEOS to provide the first batch of attributed recycled polyethylene (PE). The global manufacturer of petrochemicals, speciality chemicals and oil products is leveraging PLASTIC ENERGY’s advanced recycling process to convert waste plastic into high-quality polymers, replacing oil-based products with material featuring identical specifications and the same level of product purity as virgin plastic.
RSB certifies that the attributed recycled polymers used in the caps, tops and/or coatings of Tetra Pak carton packages are produced sustainably.
Being the first in our sector to be awarded the RSB Advanced Products certification represents yet another milestone in our journey towards the world’s most sustainable food package: a carton that is fully made from renewable or recycled materials, is convenient and safe - hence enabling a resilient food system - is fully recyclable and carbon-neutral. Qualifying and providing assurance of mass balance claims is critical to ensure transparency and accountability within the system, therefore enhancing confidence from the end-user perspective.
Following the RSB chain of custody attribution method, the plastics are made of a mix of recycled and non-recycled materials, with the corresponding mass of recycled materials tracked throughout the Tetra Pak supply chain.
Tetra Pak has just recently announced the introduction of certified recycled polymers, becoming the first company in the food and beverage packaging industry to be awarded the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) Advanced Products certification. This means our carton packages integrating attributed[1] recycled polymers are now available for food and beverage manufacturers. This move marks a key step in Tetra Pak’s approach to circularity which includes: minimising dependency on fossil-based resources; responsibly sourcing raw materials; designing packages for enhanced recycling and reduced litter; and building partnerships to develop effective collection and recycling infrastructure worldwide.

The new 300ml oval design has been produced using 100% recycled HDPE plastic and features an eye-catching whale tail snap-on closure; both tooled at Spectra’s dedicated design and tooling facility.

Extrusion blow moulding (EBM) is a highly versatile process that can provide unique shapes, sizes and neck types, using a variety of plastics. This versatility gives an overwhelming advantage over other bottle manufacturing processes.
One of the most common resins used in the EBM process is HDPE (high density polyethylene). Although semi-opaque in its natural state, a high gloss feel and appearance can be achieved if required. Similarly, a more squeezable feel can be achieved using MDPE (medium density polyethylene), making it ideal for products such as creams and lotions.
Injection Stretch Blowmoulding (ISB) enables the manufacture of
high-quality bottles in PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate), which boast a clarity similar to glass. However, the ISB process can also produce less clear materials, such as polypropylene (PP) if required.
Spectra’s state-of-the-art injection stretch blow-moulding machines can produce PET containers in capacity sizes from 50ml up to 500ml. Available in a virtually limitless choice of colours, our PET bottles can
be provided in solid opaque finishes as well as varying stylish translucent shades.
