Story: Planted in the ancient soils of the K1 Vineyard, Gruner Veltliner has found a new home in the cool southern Adelaide Hills where it produces exceptional white wines that capture both the old-world essence of Austria and the modern vibrancy and clarity of Australia.

Vintage: The 2019 growing season started with mild weather and below average rainfall. Some late spring rain provided a bit of relief from the dry conditions. A heatwave in January was luckily too early in the ripening cycle to cause any damage to the fruit. This was followed by a very mild and dry finish to the vintage, allowing good hang time and flavour development to the smaller than average crop.

Nose: Aromas of exotic Nashi pear and spices lift from the glass with hints of apple blossom, citrus rind and celery.

Palate: The palate is led by a crisp acid line with notes of green apple, Nashi pear, lemongrass and kaffir lime followed by a long and elegant mineral finish with a touch of French oak.

Pairing: This wine pairs particularly well with pea and mint arancini topped with shaved grana padano.

Our Family Range reflects the progression of the Patritti business since its establishment in 1926. The single vineyard wines showcase our founder’s understanding of the importance of terroir through the selection and subsequent purchase of these sites.

In 1960 Giovanni Patritti needed to acquire more land to sustain the growth of the Dover Gardens winery and the natural choice was the nearby region of McLaren Vale. He purchased the property at Lot Three Elliot Road, Blewitt Springs and by 1969 twenty-five acres of Shiraz had been planted. With an average age of 50 years, the vines on this site give the Lot Three Shiraz an identity of its own.

VINEYARD

Our vineyard at Lot Three Elliot Road, Blewitt Springs was planted to Shiraz through the 1960s on the ancient 56 million year old soil known as North Maslin Sand. An elevation of 156 metres, sandy free-draining soil and mild to warm climate create an ideal growing medium for our old vines.

TASTING COMMENTS

Dark purple in colour with a bright crimson hue; the nose displays blue fruits, plum and raspberry, but it also has a savoury edge with wet slate and subtle integrated oak. The palate is seamlessly integrated, structured and long. Plum and blue fruit flavours work well with oak derived complexities of subtle coffee and dark chocolate. Drink now or cellar for 15+ years.

The Selkirk Shiraz offers distinctive varietal characters of lifted white pepper aroma, dark berry fruit, plum and savoury spice. It displays a well-balanced palate structure, soft supple tannins and well integrated oak.

The Tamblyn blend expresses the characteristics of the different varietals providing a complex flavour profile with a soft tannin finish; Cabernet Sauvignon provides the framework, Shiraz adds berry fruit weight, Malbec adds a perfumed lift and intense colour and the Merlot rounds out the palate.

Cabernet has a very long history in Langhorne Creek and our fruit was grown on ancient alluvial flood plain soil, traditional to this area.  It displays a classic ripe cassis aroma with supportive savoury notes. A well balanced palate showing ripe dark fruits enhanced by a silky textural finish. 

A powerful yet elegant wine, showing gorgeous varietal notes of blackberry, bramble and earth, complemented by subtle influences of chocolate and savoury nuances. The wine is supported by a fine, defining, elegant tannin structure  and shows spice and complexity from the careful use of new French oak.  This wine is very secretive as it takes its time to reveal itself, a powerful wine that will not only evolve in the glass but will reward you with patience in the cellar.

Cabernet has a very long history in Langhorne Creek and our fruit was grown on ancient alluvial flood plain soil, traditional to this area.  It displays a classic ripe cassis aroma with supportive savoury notes. A well balanced palate showing ripe dark fruits enhanced by a silky textural finish. 

We have chosen to make a fresh, vibrant style of Verdelho to express the pure varietal characters. We have used only free run juice, providing a clean, focused Verdelho with lifted perfumed citrus aromas.  The palate is bright and textural with fine acid balance and great length of flavour.

On the palate the wine is racy and moreish, with savoury fruit, textural palate and a fine dry finish. The dry finish to the wine opens itself up to be drunk with a wide range of food parings.

Our family range reflects the progression of the Patritti business since its establishment in 1926. The single vineyard wines showcase our founder’s understanding of the importance of terroir through the selection and subsequent purchase of these sites.

We named this wine after our founder Giovanni (John) Patritti, one of the earliest Italians to settle in Australia in 1925. The label design is reminiscent of the earliest Patritti labels and features the original JPB logo. Trading as ‘John Patritti Brighton’ referring to the greater region of Adelaide where the winery is located, the demand for his wines steadily grew. Today, the original JPB branding iron is still used to stamp barrels and grandson, James Mungall makes the wines that are enjoyed around the world.

VINEYARD

The fruit for this wine is sourced from selected rows in the family’s own Blewitt Springs vineyard in the McLaren Vale region. Planted in 1960, the vineyard’s free draining sandy soil, mild to warm climate and high elevation create a site perfectly suited to growing premium low yielding Shiraz grapevines.

TASTING COMMENTS

Very deep and dark almost black in colour with a deep garnet hue. Typical of Blewitt Springs the nose is loaded with blue fruits. Raspberry and plum are there too, working with chocolate, mocca and coffee from the predominantly new French and American oak. The palate is powerful and structured but is so finely balanced that there is still a sense of softness. Intense fruit flavours overlay the oak and it all finishes with a surprising freshness indicating plenty of ageing potential.

Our Family Range reflects the progression of the Patritti business since its establishment in 1926. The single vineyard wines showcase our founder’s understanding of the importance of terroir through the selection and subsequent purchase of these sites.

Giovanni Patritti purchased Section 181 Branson Road, Tatachilla in the region of McLaren Vale in 1960 to further the family’s vineyard holdings. Among other varieties, a section of the property was planted to Grenache. Today, fifteen acres of the original dry grown Grenache vines remain and are used to make this single vineyard wine.

VINEYARD

Located less than 4km from the Gulf of St Vincent, the Tatachilla vineyard’s climate is slightly cooler due to the prevailing sea breezes. The soil is characterised as yellow and buff sandstone, pebbly sandstone, and clay, providing ideal conditions for the old, dry grown Grenache vines with an average age of 50 years.

TASTING COMMENTS

Medium to deep brick red with a ruby hue; the aromatics of the wine are intense and complex with lifted fruit characters of raspberry and black cherry. The palate is rounded and juicy, the structural tannins keep it tight, but the wine is balanced and generous. Drink now or cellar for 10+ years.

94% seasoned, 6% new French oak demi muids – 15 months

Like many Italian families, food is central to our lifestyle. In the early years, traditional dishes were cooked for the many visitors and celebrations that took place at the winery. Legend has it, when there weren’t any bowls big enough to combine the spaghetti and meatball sauce, they were mixed in the bathtub.

REGION

The Adelaide Hills wine region has a reputation for producing some of Australia’s most exciting cool climate wines. With an average elevation around 600 metres the climate is significantly cooler than the neighbouring areas. Cool, dry summers and an autumn ripening period produce a balanced fruit flavour profile and natural acidity.

TASTING COMMENTS

Light pale straw in colour with a light green tint. Fruit aromas of citrus and white peach with honeysuckle, lemon curd and subtle toast from barrel fermentation and maturation on yeast lees. The palate is complex, textural and structured with vibrant acidity working with stone fruit flavours.

BARREL MATURATION

40% new, 40% 1 year old, 14% 2 year old French oak puncheons, 6% stainless tank – 8 months barrel maturation

Standing at 6ft 7in, Primo Carnera was the tallest ever World Heavyweight Boxing Champion when crowned in 1933. In the 1950s, Giovanni was surprised by an impromptu visit from the Ambling Alp; sparking a lifelong friendship.

REGION

McLaren Vale enjoys a reputation for producing high quality Shiraz and Grenache along with Cabernet Sauvignon and some alternative varietals from Italy and Spain. Elevation peaks at 350 metres along the Sellicks foothills with these vineyards influenced by the cooler gully winds making them ideal for white wine and cooler climate varieties. Majority of vineyards are located on gently undulating land with strong coastal influences. The Mediterranean climate is characterised by moderate winters, warm summer and predictable winter rainfall.

TASTING COMMENTS

Deep brick red in colour with a deep ruby hue; aromas of cassis, mulberries and mint with just a subtle hint of toasty French oak. The flavours on the palate are dominated by cassis and berries that linger. The body is medium weight and the tannins are long and supportive of the flavours with a gentle and persistent finish.

25% new French, 75% seasoned French and American 500L oak puncheons – 15 months
